520 _aThough small in size, Sri Lanka has a varied climate and topography, which has given rise to rich species diversity, believed to be the highest in Asia, in terms of unit land area. This is especially relevant for mammals, reptiles, amphibians and flowering plants. The biological wealth is distributed within a multitude of systems that have been broadly categorized as coastal and marine, forest, wetland and cultivated areas.Sri Lanka is also identified as one of the global biodiversity hotspots indicating its significance in biological wealth and threats to the biological wealth.
